Started my bathroom remodel 2 weeks ago with a $12K contract. Since then, contractor has "discovered" several issues:

- Rotted subfloor: +$800
- Old plumbing needs replacing: +$1200
- Electrical not up to code: +$600
- "While we're at it" upgrades he suggests: +$900

I'm now at $15,500 and counting. Are these legitimate issues or am I being taken for a ride? 😠

How do I know what's real vs unnecessary? He shows me pictures and it looks bad, but I don't know enough to tell if it NEEDS fixing or if he's just padding the bill.

Did you have surprise costs like this? Is this normal? Should I get a second opinion? I feel stuck because he's already halfway done.
